Co-Curricular Clubs & Activities

Shorewood High School is pleased to offer more than 40 different clubs and co-curricular activities to our students. The clubs on this page are the only ones offered for the 2012-2013 school year--all others are considered defunct.

For more information on clubs, e-mail the advisors listed below. The best way for students to find out about meeting times is to listen to the announcements every day at the beginning of 4th hour. To read past announcements, click here.

Students wishing to start a new club should:

  1. Find a teacher willing to act as club advisor
  2. On a sheet of paper, list the advisor, names of any interested members, prospective meeting times and locations (ie, every Wednesday @ lunchtime), & the mission/purpose of the club
  3. Turn this sheet in to Mr. Harris and await approval

American Field Service (AFS) Club

Please e-mail Mr. Schulteis for info on meeting times.

Cake Decorating & Culinary Arts

The Cake Decorating Club at Shorewood High School allows students to gain experience in baking, decorating, and garnishing cupcakes and cakes.  We bake our own cupcakes with recipes the club members find and would like to try.  We also make our own different kinds of frosting to decorate our cupcakes with.  Then we make embellishments out of edible material to decorate our cupcakes with. About once per month we make a large quantity of various cupcakes and sell them to students and staff at SHS to benefit the local women's shelter.  It is a very fun and hands-on club where the students learn various skills they can use in the culinary world.

Chess Team/Chess Club

The Chess Team consists of varsity and junior varsity members that compete in the Milwaukee City Chess League from early November to early March. The season includes four home and four away matches culminating with an all-day, league-wide tournament. The team meets after school two days per week and at lunch almost daily for practice from the first week of October until the end of the season.

The Chess Club is a less formal organization of students who meet at lunch daily from the first week of October until the end of the season. Chess Club offers the opportunity for students to enjoy/learn chess in a less competitive setting. Chess Club also allows students to experience chess that otherwise may not have the time or skill to make a commitment to the Chess Team. Chess Club additionally gives those students a chance to develop their skills if at some time in the future they might want to compete with the Chess Team.

Mock Trial teaches students how to think intelligently, write clearly, speak passionately, and compete gracefully, with a little bit of law education thrown in for good measure. Student attorneys learn to conduct themselves as real lawyers would in a courtroom, giving opening statements and closing arguments that need to convince a jury of the fictional defendant’s guilt or innocence. Student witnesses learn to play a part defending their characters’ convictions on the stand. Attorneys and witnesses alike learn the importance of good sportsmanship in practices at the competition. Mock Trial helps develop poise and confidence as well as knowledge of courts and the legal system. Shorewood's Mock Trial team has a long-standing reputation as one of the best teams in Wisconsin.

With these measures, Outdoor Adventure Club wishes to provide a passion and respect for the wilderness that will carry over into every aspect of life for each participant.

Peer Mentors

Mentoring provides students with the opportunity to work with peers about personal, social, academic, and transitional issues present in their lives. Interested peer mentors will need to apply and go through training once they are selected as a mentor. Mentors will then be assigned freshman, sophomore, and/or transfer students to mentor at times throughout the school year to help address issues, learn how to make positive decisions, and/or receive help with the academic stressors (i.e. organization, homework completion, time management, etc.) of transitioning to a new school.

Applications for peer mentors are accepted in the spring.

Pegasus

Pegasus is two things: it is a group of students who get together every week to plan events that contribute to the literary and artistic community of SHS, and it is an art and literary magazine that comes out at the end of every school year. Pegasus-run contests have attracted dozens of submissions from students who otherwise might not have found a way to share their photograph or short stories. Poetry Nights give members and non-members a chance to enjoy reading and hearing poems for a couple of hours, without having to analyze them or write papers. Finally, at the end of the year, Pegasus members log hours and hours after school and on weekends to create a magazine filled with the work of students who submitted to the magazine over the course of the year. The end result is a beautiful publication that editors and contributors alike can be proud of.

Pegasus meets Tuesdays at 3:15 in Rm. 274 (Performing Arts building)
